About Local 488

Local 488 represents pipe tradespeople and instrument technicians in Northern Alberta, and Refrigeration Mechanics throughout Alberta.

We are affiliated with the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipefitting Industry of the US and Canada.

Our membership grows every month. It now stands at more than 10,000, making us North America’s largest construction trades local.

Local 488 is run by an Executive Board and a Business Manager, all of whom are elected by members every three years. Our Business Agents are also elected. We employ a staff of 33 in our administration, and our training arm employs 25.

Our Pension and Health & Welfare Benefits plans are independently operated and overseen by elected trustees equally representing members and independent trustees.

Our investment in member training facilities and programs also independently operated by the Edmonton Pipe Trades Educational Trust.

Local 488’s headquarters and training facilities are located on 8 acres in west Edmonton. We also operate an office/training centre in Fort McMurray, the centre of the oil sands industry.
